Amyloidosis Africa is a pan-African initiative dedicated to addressing one of the most underrecognized causes of organ failure and heart disease on the continent: amyloidosis. Despite growing global awareness, amyloidosis remains largely invisible within African health systems, leading to delayed diagnosis, preventable complications, and inequitable access to care. Our initiative was established to change this reality through a coordinated, Africa-led approach that brings together awareness, medical education, research, quality improvement, and patient support.

Why Amyloidosis Africa Was Created

Across Africa, many patients with amyloidosis are misdiagnosed for years. Symptoms are often attributed to more common conditions such as heart failure, kidney disease, diabetes, or neuropathy. Limited awareness, lack of local data, and restricted access to diagnostic tools contribute to this diagnostic gap. Amyloidosis Africa was created to respond to these challenges by building a structured platform that supports earlier recognition, strengthens clinical capacity, and ensures African patients are represented in global amyloidosis efforts.

Our Vision

Our vision is a future in which amyloidosis is recognized early, accurately diagnosed, and appropriately managed across African health systems. We believe that improving outcomes requires more than isolated education or research projects. It requires an integrated, continent-wide initiative led by African clinicians and researchers, informed by local realities, and connected to global expertise.

What Makes Amyloidosis Africa Different

Amyloidosis Africa is not a single program or short-term campaign. It is a long-term, systems-focused initiative built on collaboration and sustainability. Key pillars of our initiative include:

Medical Education

We deliver evidence-based, CPD-accredited education through online courses, webinars, hands-on training, and in-person events, tailored to African clinical contexts.

Africa-Led Research

We promote observational studies, registries, and collaborative research that generate locally relevant data and strengthen African leadership in amyloidosis research.

Building Pan-African Collaboration

We promote observational studies, registries, and collaborative research that generate locally relevant data and strengthen African leadership in amyloidosis research.

Quality Improvement

We support real-world quality improvement initiatives aimed at reducing diagnostic delays and improving referral pathways within existing health systems.

Awareness and Early Recognition

We work to improve awareness among healthcare professionals and communities so that amyloidosis is considered earlier in the diagnostic journey.

Patient Support and Advocacy

We aim to empower patients and families with reliable information while advocating for recognition of amyloidosis within national health priorities.

Why Africa Needs Its Own Amyloidosis Initiative

Africa has the greatest genetic diversity globally and unique health system challenges. Relying solely on data and guidelines generated outside the continent limits their relevance and effectiveness.

An Africa-focused initiative ensures that:

  • Disease patterns specific to African populations are studied

  • Genetic variants relevant to African ancestry are recognized

  • Care pathways reflect local resources and realities

  • African patients are no longer invisible in global datasets

Amyloidosis Africa exists to ensure that Africa is not left behind in advances in amyloidosis care.

Our Commitment to Equity and Ethics

All activities under Amyloidosis Africa are guided by principles of equity, ethical practice, and local ownership. We prioritize capacity building, fair collaboration, and responsible research that benefits African communities.

Looking Ahead

Amyloidosis Africa continues to grow as a platform for education, research, and collaboration. As awareness increases and data improves, we aim to support earlier diagnosis, better care pathways, and stronger advocacy across the continent.

Our work is driven by the belief that where a patient lives should not determine whether their disease is recognized or treated.

Join Amyloidosis Africa in building a future where amyloidosis is visible, diagnosable, and treatable across Africa.
